We all know that you can find us in the mountains, but we also love the desert! Sedona, AZ is a great place to tie the knot and is full of hidden gems for an intimate elopement. Michael and I adventured to Sedona last month, and it was the first time either of us had been there. The southwest was on our road map last year when we bought our new camper/home, but Covid had other plans and we skipped that portion of our journey. This year we will be back in Sedona in May and June!
Michael and I were so excited to explore Sedona and find different options for eloping couples. If I am being honest, Sedona is BUSY, but we were able to find a few gems where we only saw a handful of people on the trails and had the lookouts totally to ourselves. Cathedral Rock is definitely a busier hike, but we were still able to find our own little nooks and have epic views.
We connected with the sweetest dress designer, Mackenzie, of Topaz & Thread. She wanted a variety of content for one of her gowns, and we were thrilled to work with her! This dress is called Jenessa, and her gowns are adjustable sizes 2-18. She also makes custom orders, and is overall a gem to work with! We loved collaborating with her!
Cathedral Rock Trail is 1.2 miles and is rated as moderate. Michael and I also gave it a moderate rating. The beginning of the trail has an easy incline, but there is a bit of a scramble to get to the top. Because we were working with a dress designer and my client didn’t own the dress, we decided not to make the scramble. The view is epic and is totally worth it, but keep in mind that you will probably get dirty in a wedding dress (which means you had an awesome day, in my opinion). We have another blog coming up that gives an overview of the entire hike, but for now you can check out the AllTrails here.
When Michael and I went to the trail the first time to location scout, we got right in and the trail wasn’t overly packed. There was a bit of a traffic jam at the scramble, but nothing horrible. When we came back for our session, we had to wait 45 minutes for a parking spot before even starting the trail. This worked out because it was raining, but this is definitely something to keep in mind if you are planning a Cathedral Rock elopement. The nice thing is that the parking area is only ‘so big’, and they do not allow street parking. That means that the trail will only have as many people as can fit in the parking lot.
The weather put on a SHOW for this bridal session. Typically we wouldn’t be worried about rain and love the adventure that a rainy day brings. However, with this being a designer collaboration, we had to do our best to keep the dress clean. Rain on the red rocks means RED MUD. We were able to easily explore around the muddy areas, and the weather was epic for the entire session. The clouds nestled down into the red rock and created such a dramatic backdrop. The sun also peeked in and out throughout the session, adding even more to the drama. Overall I’ll call it a 10/10.
Brittany met us in Sedona from Phoenix. She is my kind of woman because she is down for ANY adventure. Before the rain rolled in, we originally planned to shoot at sunrise. She didn’t even hesitate and was immediately down for any hike at any time. She is such a kind, sweet, free-spirited soul, and we were stoked to have her in front of our lens.

This Cathedral Rock bridal adventure session in Sedona, Arizona is beautiful. I don’t see nearly enough bridal portraits of adventure brides playing and frolicking in their stunning elopement wedding dresses. Thanks for inspiring more people to create beautiful art like this.
Great post and epic images!! I really want to visit there! You really give a great insight into what an elopement consists of.
I love how much fun she’s having in her dress!
Such a fun session! I don’t know why I especially love that last one, it’s so timeless and peaceful. If I were her I would print it large and frame it. Gorgeous!
